Handmade

Sustainable Materials
| Thuy Pham does not draw boundaries. She sets the conditions under which a boundary might form, and then she watches it decide for itself. A sheet of handmade kozo paper, dampened to the exact threshold where fiber accepts ink without resistance. Pigment applied with a bamboo brush — sumi black on one side, a warm mineral ochre on the other. The ink touches the wet fiber and blooms outward, each side migrating toward the center at its own pace, in its own temperature, until the two drifts meet somewhere in the middle and negotiate a shared edge that neither side chose. This work is the quietest record of that negotiation. The left field holds the cool register — grey-blue, almost atmospheric, the color of Gulf fog seen from a kitchen window at dawn. The right field holds the warm — cream deepening to ochre, the color of Bywater light on a plaster wall after the rain has stopped. Between them, no line. Only a zone of mutual: the cool pulling warmth into its edge, the warm accepting a grey undertone it didn't ask for. This is not compromise. This is drift — two materials occupying the same surface, each changed by the other's presence, neither willing to retreat. The horizontal textures running through both fields are the physical memory of the paper's fiber direction — the kozo strands carrying moisture in channels that Thuy learned to read the way she once read tidal charts. The fine cracks are not damage. They are the paper drying at different rates in different zones, contracting where one pigment held more water than its neighbor. The surface records everything: the humidity in the studio that afternoon, the weight of Thuy's hand as she laid the brush, the moment she chose to stop and let the drift finish the sentence she'd only begun. |
