About The Weight of Staying
| The larger dog's fur took eleven layers. I started with raw umber and built up toward cream — each layer thinner than the last, each one pressed in with the flat of my palm. By the eighth layer the fur started to look like fur. By the eleventh it felt like fur. I stopped not because it was finished but because my hand told me the surface had enough memory. The puppy is a different color entirely — reddish-brown, almost rust. I mixed it from the same iron oxide I use for backgrounds, just lighter. The puppy sits to the right, leaning in. Its nose is about an inch from the larger dog's cheek. That inch is the entire painting. Everything else is just the surface that inch happens to live on. The wall behind them is the oldest part of the canvas. I painted it first and then forgot about it for two weeks. When I came back the grey-blue had dried into something I didn't expect — it looked like a wall that had been painted over many times and the old colors were showing through the cracks. I didn't fix it. The wall had already done its job. Both dogs wear collars. The larger dog's collar has a metal ring. I painted the ring in three strokes — dark, then lighter, then a single highlight. Three strokes is all a ring needs. More would make it a statement. Less would make it invisible. The puppy's paw rests on the ground near the larger dog's front leg. They're not touching. They don't need to. The space between them is warm the same way the air between two people who know each other well is warm. "The Weight of Staying." Staying isn't light work. It has mass. It presses into the ground. |
