About The Look Between
| This canvas is 40 by 60 inches. The couple takes up about 40 percent of the surface. The rest is ours — the part we actually get to build. Elena started with the background. She laid down terracotta dust, faded indigo, and warm sand in overlapping patches — the same rhythm she uses when repairing a textile, short strokes packed close together, each one responding to the last. She worked for four days on that layer alone. By the end of her session the background already had depth, like a wall that had been painted over many times and the colors were bleeding through. Then Tomás came in. He mixed thick batches of iron oxide and ash white — paint so heavy it barely moved on the knife. He pressed it into the existing layer in large, irregular slabs. The paint cracked as it dried. Some slabs curled at the edges. Some broke off entirely, revealing Elena's indigo patches underneath. He didn't fix any of it. The surface looks like a wall after a hundred years of weather — paint on paint on paint, each layer a different decade. The pink shapes scattered across the background are the last addition. Tomás pressed small mounds of cochineal-tinted pigment into the wet surface — some no bigger than a coin, some the size of a fist. They look like flowers from a distance. Up close they look like nothing you've seen before: just paint that decided to become something on its own. The figures were painted over the finished background. This is the only part of the process that required precision — Tomás had to work around the existing texture, letting the impasto frame them without overwhelming them. The bride's veil is almost pure white with a faint warm undertone. The groom's suit is deep warm brown, not black. Black would have created a hole in the painting. Brown keeps it in the same temperature family as the background. They're looking at each other. Not posing, not performing — just looking. The distance between their eyes is about eight inches. Everything in the painting is about that eight inches. "The Look Between." The space where two people meet without touching. |

About Artist
Paint doing what I try to make clay do. Build up. Hold weight. Cast shadow
Tomás Vargas spent a decade making functional pottery — bowls, cups, vessels — in his garage, selling to Santa Fe galleries and using the rejects at home. He never chased control over his glazes; the kiln decided. Crackle, crawl, ash deposit — what potters call "faults," Tomás called the work.
They are married. They share a converted-garage studio. And since 2023, they share every canvas. Elena lays the ground — a rhythm of short parallel strokes like sashiko mending, terracotta dust and faded indigo, patches where the canvas breathes through. Tomás presses in — broad strokes of iron oxide and ash white dragged with full arm weight, cracking where the paint dries too fast, collapsing at the edges to reveal Elena's repair marks beneath. She builds the wound. He opens it wider. The painting is what's left.
Two makers. One canvas. No compromise.
