| I press into paint the way geology presses into itself — not with grace, but with weight. My palette knife enters the surface with my whole arm behind it, the blade biting into whatever I laid down the hour before, the day before, the week before. My tremor rides along — it has been in my hands since I was thirty-two, the same pulse that ended my career as a classical realist and began something rawer. Where a steady hand would leave a clean seam, my hand leaves an edge that breathes. What you're looking at is a wall in cross-section. The left side — the pale cream, the light umber, the thin ridges exposed by scraping — that is what time wears things down to. Geologists call it an unconformity: the place where older rock meets younger rock and the layers in between are simply missing, erased by pressure or weather or the patient work of standing still for a million years. I didn't paint those light areas. I revealed them. I scraped away what was on top until what was underneath could breathe. The dark mass on the right is where the weight lives. I kept returning to that zone — pressing more pigment into it, ridge upon ridge, each pass adding to the pressure the lower layers already carried. The impasto rises off the canvas in thick undulations. Run your fingers across it and you'll feel every pass I made: the heavy ridges where my hand slowed, the thin stretches where it accelerated, the irregular edges where the tremor said no, not there, here. The pale brown and earth yellow scraping through the darkness are not accents I added. They are the underlayers refusing to stay buried — the wall's memory of what it was before it became this heavy. The boundary between light and dark is not a line I drew. It is the place where the scraping stopped and the accumulating began, where I changed direction, where the weight started to matter more than the reveal. I don't blend these zones. I let them argue. The light side says: this is what was underneath. The dark side says: this is what it became. Neither side apologizes. I have been told my paintings are dark. They are not dark. They are heavy. There is a difference. Darkness is an absence. Weight is an accumulation — of passes, of pressure, of the body returning to the same place again and again because it hasn't finished saying what it needs to say. The dark mass on this canvas weighs more than the light. You can see it weighing more. That is the painting telling you the truth about how it was built. |
