| Mira Tanaka has never heard the sound her own shadow makes. She doesn't know if it has one. What she knows is that when her body stands between the studio window and the canvas, something happens to the surface she just finished reading: a shape appears that her fingers cannot feel. The ridges she laid down with her hands — each one measured by touch, each height calibrated by the pressure of her fingertip against the crest — still exist beneath the shadow, but they are no longer legible to the eye. The shadow has softened them. The light that revealed their depth a moment ago is now blocked by the body that made them, and what was tactile evidence has become something quieter: a surface that remembers being touched but no longer looks like it was. This work holds that moment — the instant after the hand withdraws and the body remains. The horizontal impasto ridges that cover the surface are Mira's touch vocabulary: each ridge a pass of the hand, each undulation a question the fingers asked and the surface answered. They were built to be read by touch, not by sight. But then the body that made them turned toward the window, and the light behind her cast her shape across the surface she had just finished. The diagonal shadow that falls from the upper right is not painted. It is the record of a body that stopped working and started standing — a maker who became a witness to her own making, and whose presence, for the first time in the process, had nothing to do with her hands. In the shadow zone, the ridges lose their sharpness. This is not because they have been erased. It is because the light that gave them dimension has been intercepted by the very body that created them. For Mira, this is the most honest relationship between a maker and her work: the body that built the surface is also the body that partially obscures it. Presence and erasure are not opposites here. They are the same event, seen from two angles — one tactile, one visual. The fingers know the ridges are still there, as deep and deliberate as ever. The eyes see only softness, ambiguity, a surface that has gone quiet under the weight of the body that made it speak. The figure-like quality of the shadow is not an accident of light. It is the only self-portrait a deaf painter can make without sound: a body announced not by voice or footstep or breath, but by the simple fact of blocking the light. Where stillness fell across the surface, touch ends and vision begins. The ridges underneath are still there, still counting, still faithful to the hand that made them. But the shadow tells a different truth — that every maker eventually stands back from her work, and in the moment of standing, she becomes something her hands could never have planned: a shape that the world sees before she sees herself. |
