Handmade

Sustainable Materials
| When Elena and Tomás Vargas share a canvas, the result is never a single voice. Elena's practice was shaped by her grandmother's sashiko — dark thread stitching across worn fabric in rhythmic repetition, not to repair but to honor the place where the damage happened. Tomás's practice was forged in the kiln: glazes that crack and shift in the heat, creating surfaces no hand could have planned, beauty that only fire can authorize. When they work on the same surface, these two vocabularies do not blend. They stand side by side and age at different speeds, the way two materials cooling from different temperatures will always crack along different lines. This work is their most honest negotiation. Three vertical territories occupy the surface, each one its own world. The left field belongs to Elena — warm oatmeal, fine craquelure spreading like sashiko stitches across worn linen, each crack following the rhythm of a hand that has repeated the same mending gesture for decades. The right field belongs to Tomás — deep black-brown, dense and slow, the surface thick with the residue of accumulated heat, barely cracking because it has already been through the fire and come out the other side knowing what it is. The middle zone belongs to neither of them. Terracotta — warmer than Elena's register, softer than Tomás's — it is the third territory that appears when two practices occupy the same surface and neither one pulls away. Elena's thread and Tomás's kiln-change glaze both understand heat, but they hold it differently: one in the patience of the stitch, one in the violence of the flame. The middle is where those two temperatures met and produced something neither one could have made alone. The wavy edges between the zones are not decorative. They are the living record of two makers who refused to cut a hard line. Elena's sashiko thread curves with the fabric, never forcing a straight path through damaged cloth. Tomás's glaze flows along the crack, following the stress line the kiln has already written. Where their territories touch, the edges breathe — undulating, alive, as if the boundary itself is inhaling and exhaling, expanding and contracting with the day's temperature, the way two bodies sharing a bed will shift toward and away from each other through the night without ever deciding who moved first. The cracks in each zone tell a different truth about time. Elena's field cracks fine and fast, the way linen gives way under repeated stitching — small surrenders, each one barely visible, accumulating into a network that holds the surface together even as it breaks apart. Tomás's field barely cracks at all, but carries the weight of everything it has survived — thick, compressed, the texture of a material that has been remade so many times it no longer remembers its original shape. The middle field cracks deepest of all, because it has been pulled in two directions at once: Elena's patience asking it to hold, Tomás's heat asking it to let go. The result is a crackle pattern that neither maker designed — the third voice, the one that only speaks when two others are arguing. |

About Artist
Paint doing what I try to make clay do. Build up. Hold weight. Cast shadow
Tomás Vargas spent a decade making functional pottery — bowls, cups, vessels — in his garage, selling to Santa Fe galleries and using the rejects at home. He never chased control over his glazes; the kiln decided. Crackle, crawl, ash deposit — what potters call "faults," Tomás called the work.
They are married. They share a converted-garage studio. And since 2023, they share every canvas. Elena lays the ground — a rhythm of short parallel strokes like sashiko mending, terracotta dust and faded indigo, patches where the canvas breathes through. Tomás presses in — broad strokes of iron oxide and ash white dragged with full arm weight, cracking where the paint dries too fast, collapsing at the edges to reveal Elena's repair marks beneath. She builds the wound. He opens it wider. The painting is what's left.
Two makers. One canvas. No compromise.
