| Celine Moreau spent fifteen years erasing exactly what you see here. As a fresco conservator across Southern France, her job was to reverse the tide lines, dissolve the salt crystals, smooth the eruptions — to persuade a wall that it was still the painting it had been six centuries ago, even as every molecule in it was becoming something else. She was very good at it. Then one November morning on a scaffold in Sisteron, she looked at the wall she'd spent three years trying to save and realized the most beautiful thing about it was the part she'd been paid to erase: the salt pushing pigment aside in tiny crystalline eruptions, the moisture blooming through the plaster in gradients no brush could have painted, the cracks exposing the layers beneath like a wound that had decided to tell the truth instead of healing. This work is what happens when a woman who knows exactly how a wall deteriorates stops preventing it and starts collaborating with it. The surface you see was not painted so much as allowed. Unprimed linen, wetted and receptive. Oil pigment thinned to the consistency of tea, poured and brushed in floods that seep into the fiber and bloom at their edges — the same tide lines conservators call "water staining" and spend hours reversing. Salt dissolved in water and brushed onto the surface before the paint, so that as it dries, the crystals push the pigment aside in eruptions that Celine once would have treated and now simply watches. The deep fissure at the upper left is not a crack in the painting. It is the painting being honest about what's underneath — a passage where the surface pulled apart as it dried, revealing the warm sienna layer beneath, the way a wall reveals its history when it finally stops pretending it's intact. Every mark on this surface is a record of a real event: moisture moving through fiber, salt crystallizing under pressure, pigment migrating toward or away from water. Celine set the conditions. The material wrote the story. Her hand is in the work — in the pour, in the timing, in the decision of when to stop — but the surface itself did most of the living. She considers this the only honest way to paint: to make something that behaves the way the world behaves when no one is trying to fix it. |

About Artist
"The wall was always right. I was the one who was wrong."
She moved to a converted barn near Wassaic in the Hudson Valley and started painting the way walls behave when no one is trying to save them. Her paintings don't look painted — they look like they happened. Thin washes of earth pigment seep into unprimed linen and bloom at their edges. Sea salt dissolved in water crystallizes as it dries, pushing pigment aside in tiny eruptions. She sprays mist from across the room. She leaves windows open overnight, letting the valley's humidity participate. Her palette — warm ivory, pale ochre, terre verte, dusty rose, faded lapis, raw sienna — is the palette of walls that have been alive for six hundred years. The patience isn't in the action. The patience is in the restraint: watching the material work and not correcting it when it does something she didn't plan.
