| You found the line. Good. That's where it started — for the wall, I mean. Not for you. That dark horizontal mark running across the surface is a tide line. I know it well. I spent fifteen years erasing them from church walls across Southern France — re-adhering the pigment the moisture had loosened, filling the cracks the salt had opened, convincing the surface that it was still the painting it had been six centuries ago, even as every molecule in it was becoming something else. The tide line was always my enemy. It was the evidence that the wall had been wet — that water had risen to this height, dissolved what it touched, and retreated, leaving behind a stain the shape of its own departure. I was very good at making those stains disappear. Now I make them stay. Above the line, the wall dried quickly. The pigment had time to settle but not to sink — it sits on the surface, pale and quiet, the way a wall looks when it has been left alone. The canvas texture is still visible because the wash was thin and the fiber was dry enough to resist absorption. This is the part of the wall that got to keep its composure. Below the line, everything is heavier. The wall stayed wet longer down here — the moisture lingered, the pigment had time to seep into the fiber and carry its minerals deeper, the way groundwater carries iron into limestone until the stone itself changes color. The darker strokes in the lower register are not more paint. They are the same paint, given more time. Time is the only variable. The wall at the bottom had more of it — more hours saturated, more days absorbing, more seasons of quietly becoming something its builders never intended. I used to reverse this process. Now I trust it. The vertical marks on the left are what gravity does when the wall stops being horizontal and the water remembers it has weight. The moisture I sprayed at the top followed the weave of the linen downward, pulling dissolved pigment with it, and stopped where the fabric was dry enough to resist. Each drip is a small autobiography — the path the water chose, the speed it traveled, the moment it ran out of momentum and surrendered to the surface. I did not paint those drips. I aimed the water and got out of the way. The dark masses on the right are where the water evaporated last. In the corners and crevices of a wall — behind a pipe, under a windowsill, in the angle where the plaster meets the stone — the moisture hides. It dries more slowly there because the air cannot reach it. And because it dries slowly, the pigment it carries has time to concentrate, to settle, to become something denser and darker than any of the areas that dried in open air. These are not mysterious shadows. They are the honest places — the parts of the wall that took longest to pretend they were fine. I am telling you all of this because the painting will not. It will just hang there, quiet and foggy, and you will think it is a landscape or an abstraction or a mood. It is none of those things. It is a wall testifying to the fact that water once rose to this height and then left, and that the wall remembers every centimeter of the visit. I used to silence that testimony. I was the best in my department at making walls forget what had happened to them. This painting is my apology — to every wall I ever cleaned, to every tide line I ever erased, to every stain I convinced to disappear as though it had never occurred. The stain occurred. The water was here. The wall was changed. That is not damage. That is the most honest record a surface can keep. |

About Artist
"The wall was always right. I was the one who was wrong."
She moved to a converted barn near Wassaic in the Hudson Valley and started painting the way walls behave when no one is trying to save them. Her paintings don't look painted — they look like they happened. Thin washes of earth pigment seep into unprimed linen and bloom at their edges. Sea salt dissolved in water crystallizes as it dries, pushing pigment aside in tiny eruptions. She sprays mist from across the room. She leaves windows open overnight, letting the valley's humidity participate. Her palette — warm ivory, pale ochre, terre verte, dusty rose, faded lapis, raw sienna — is the palette of walls that have been alive for six hundred years. The patience isn't in the action. The patience is in the restraint: watching the material work and not correcting it when it does something she didn't plan.
