About Artist

"I spent ten years drawing the line where water meets land. The water and the land never agreed about where that was."
Thuy Pham is a Vietnamese-American artist based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born in Saigon in 1985, her family emigrated to the Versailles neighborhood of New Orleans East when she was four — one of the densest Vietnamese communities in the United States. She studied geography at Louisiana State University and spent a decade as a cartographer for the state's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, mapping the eroding coastline of southern Louisiana at a rate that outpaced her ability to chart it. She left cartography in 2019 after an evening when she spilled tea across a draft survey map and watched the precise shoreline dissolve into a field of blue-grey ink — and recognized, for the first time, a map that told the truth about the coast: not a line where water stops and land begins, but a zone of negotiation, a drift between categories. Working from a converted garage in the Bywater, she creates large-scale ink works on damp handmade kozo paper, allowing pigments to bloom, migrate, and find their own edges through the wet fibers. Each piece is a single session — once the paper dries, the image is fixed, as irreversible as a coastline on a specific day at a specific hour. Her wabi-sabi angle is DRIFT: the beauty of things that are unmoored from fixed categories — the coastline that's neither land nor sea, the identity that's neither here nor there, the image that's neither arriving nor departing.
