About Artist

"Each mark is the same prayer. None of them sound alike."
Amara Osei is a Ghanaian-American painter based in Asheville, North Carolina. Born in Accra, she grew up beside her grandmother's kente loom — the rhythm of the shuttle passing through the warp was the first language she learned. At twelve, she relocated to Richmond, Virginia, where the patience of hardwood forests became her second vocabulary. She studied botany at the University of Virginia, completed a master's in ecology, and spent five years as a field botanist tracking moss and lichen succession on abandoned industrial sites across Appalachia. The turning point came during her third year at a decommissioned iron furnace in southwest Virginia, when she recognized the rhythm she'd been watching on the rocks: the same one her grandmother's shuttle had made — the same small gesture, repeated with absolute fidelity, each repetition subtly different, the differences not errors but evidence of being alive. She resigned two weeks later. Three months after that she was in a converted garage in Asheville, pressing a small round brush into unprimed linen for the first time.
Her core concept is Devotion through Repetition: a number four round sable brush, diluted oil paint, pressed into unprimed linen to leave a soft oval mark three or four millimeters across. Lift, move, press again. The same mark. The same pressure. The same interval. Hundreds of times, sometimes thousands. Each mark intends to be identical. None of them are. The hand trembles, the pressure varies, the spacing drifts — these deviations are not mistakes. They are the proof that a living hand made each mark. Her palette — moss green, lichen silver-grey, mushroom, bark brown, fog white, deep forest — is the floor of the Appalachian cove forest she hikes every morning. Green is her signature, the only one in the AEVART roster.
