| If you've seen Cell, you already know the alphabet. This is the glossary. Same hand. Same linen. Same black on cream. Same grid my fingers need so I can find my way back to each shape without asking my eyes for help. But where Cell gives you one character per compartment — a single tactile letter, a braille cell — this one starts putting them together. The left column isn't shapes. It's syntax. Short vertical strokes: pause here. Long verticals: keep going. Dense horizontal lines: slow down. Thick bars: stop. That's how I read my own surfaces — the lines tell my fingers what rhythm to use, the way punctuation tells a voice when to breathe. The right column is where the shapes start forming words. A square above two circles above another square — three characters in sequence, a three-syllable word my fingers can read by moving top to bottom. Three circles above three bowl shapes — the same word in a different register, softer, the bowls curving under my pad where the squares pressed flat. The horizontal lines at the base of each column are the period at the end of the sentence: this thought is finished, the next one begins elsewhere on the surface. And the plant. I didn't put it there. I mean — my hand drew it, my fingers traced the stem, my palm pressed the leaves into the surface. But I didn't decide on it the way I decided on the rectangles and circles. Those I placed. I knew where they were going before my hand arrived. The plant arrived on its own. My finger was tracing a vertical thread in the linen, following the weave from top to bottom, and somewhere around the midpoint my hand slowed — not because the thread changed direction, but because my fingertip registered something the thread hadn't told me to expect. A space between two grid cells where nothing was placed. An absence that felt like an invitation. My finger lingered. Then my right hand followed, and the stem appeared, and the leaves opened outward from it, and the circles at the top and bottom showed up the way a word sometimes appears before you've finished thinking it — complete, surprising, obviously yours even though you didn't plan it. The circle at the top is the same circle from Cell — completeness, closure, a shape that ends where it began. The circle at the bottom is larger. That one isn't closure. That one is a root. Something below the surface that the stem grew out of, that the plant is still connected to, that my finger can feel but can't see. In Cell, the circle means this shape is whole. Here, the larger circle means this shape is still growing from somewhere I can't reach. The leaves are between those two circles — between completeness and origin — and they're the only part of the painting that isn't arranged. They're the part that happened when my hand stopped following the plan and started following the surface instead. The mottled texture in the black fills is the same as Cell — grain under the fingertip, the paint answering a searching hand. But here it's slightly softer in the plant, because I pressed with my palm instead of my fingertip. My palm can't read detail — it reads temperature and weight and presence, not shape. The plant is what my palm knows. The grid is what my fingertips know. They coexist because I need both to navigate a world that was designed for ears I don't fully have. You can read this painting the way you'd read a glossary — starting from the left, working across, building from syntax to vocabulary to the one word that wasn't in the index. Or you can close your eyes and let your hand find its own way. The grid will guide you. The shapes will speak to your skin. And if your finger finds the stem in the center, follow it down. The root is larger than the flower. It usually is. |
