About First Pull
| Cal Whitmore spent fifteen years pulling proofs. Letterpress printing: type locked in a chase, ink rolled across the raised face, paper laid on the tympan, the bar pulled, the platen pressing fiber into metal with two tons of force. Then the moment that matters ― peeling the sheet back to read what the type left behind. The first pull is never clean. The pressure is uneven. The ink hasn't settled. The proof is imperfect, and it is the most honest thing the press will ever produce, because it shows you exactly what happened before anyone decided what the result should look like. This panel is that first pull, translated into wax. The surface was built in passes ― twenty, perhaps thirty layers of pigmented beeswax, each one fused to the one beneath by heat, each one carrying a slightly different temperature, a slightly different weight of hand. What reads as a single surface is actually a stratigraphy: a vertical archive of every decision made across the hours it took to build, each layer sealed by the one above it, buried the moment it cooled. The wave-like ridge running from the upper left is where that archive was opened ― a metal edge dragged through warm wax, lifting the upper strata like a page being turned, exposing the sandy umber layer beneath. Cal did not carve this opening. He proofed it ― pressed an edge into the surface and pulled back to read what the material had recorded underneath. The dark mass in the upper right is not painted. It is the record of pressure: wax cooled under weight, the surface cracking along the lines where the material was forced to compress and then release, the same way paper fibers crack around a deep letterpress impression when the platen meets the type. The fine craquelure spreading across that zone is not age. It is the physics of a material that was asked to hold more than it wanted to and answered by splitting open ― the most honest response a surface can give. The sand-like granules embedded in the cream field are physical witnesses: fragments of the world that existed before the wax, pressed into the surface and sealed there, like the fibers and dust that appear in a letterpress proof because the paper was never as clean as the printer assumed. The grey-yellow lumps at the lower right are displaced wax ― material pushed aside by a tool moving through at speed, the ridges forming where the surface couldn't heal fast enough to erase the passage. These are not decorative. They are the letters of a sentence Cal wrote with his body: I was here, and I was moving, and the surface remembers the direction I went. |
