| Mira Tanaka has not heard her own brushstroke in over a decade. Born profoundly deaf in one ear and losing the other in her late twenties, she does not paint to music, cannot feel the vibration of a canvas being struck, and has never heard the sound of impasto settling into linen. What she has instead is older than hearing: the pressure of a fingertip against a surface that is deciding whether to accept or resist the next layer. This is how she reads a painting — not with her eyes, which inform her of color and composition, but with her hands, which inform her of truth. This work is a record of that reading. Four columns of horizontal impasto ridges descend the surface — each ridge a single pass of the hand, each pass a question asked and answered by touch. The ridges are not uniform. Mira does not measure them with a ruler; she measures them with the pad of her index finger, pressing lightly along each crest to feel whether the height matches the one before, whether the spacing breathes the way she intended. Where a ridge rises slightly higher than its neighbors, her hand lingered — the impasto cooler, stiffer, requiring more pressure, more presence. Where it thins, her hand moved faster, the paint warmer, more willing, the surface already answering before the question was fully formed. The color shift from cool grey-blue at the top to warm oatmeal at the bottom is not a depiction of dawn or dusk. It is the temperature of the material itself — the first ridges laid when the impasto was freshly mixed and cold to the touch, the last ones when Mira's hands had warmed the paste through hours of handling until it yielded without resistance. The occasional flare of pale teal in the right-hand columns is not a decorative accent. It is a moment where Mira's fingertips registered something her eyes had not planned — a slight variation in the pigment's viscosity, a change in the room's humidity that made one batch behave differently from the one beside it. Her hands told her the surface needed a different color in that exact spot, and she trusted them. She always trusts them. The smooth bands at the top and bottom are not empty space. They are the silence before the first count and the stillness after the last — the surface before Mira's hands arrived and after they withdrew. In a practice built on touch, the untouched areas carry their own weight: they are what the painting sounds like when no one is reading it. |
