The pale section left of center has lived in light — its craquelure reads like a temperature log, each crack a season the plaster endured. Below, the gray-blue holds mineral evidence of moisture: Celine Moreau would call it efflorescence, the salt a wall exhales when it has been breathing water for decades. The ochre bands threading between them are not decoration — they are the strata of previous repairs, each one a well-intentioned fiction laid over the wall's truth. On the right, the darkest register accumulates like a corner where no light has reached. Here the surface has curled, peeled, revealed its substrate — and left behind a single spiral depression, the fossil of something that once held the wall together and then withdrew, leaving only the memory of its grip. In her decade as a conservator, Celine wrote condition reports for walls like this. The most honest notation in any report was three words: left as is. Examined. Documented. Not touched. This is the painting that results from that decision — a surface permitted to testify on its own behalf, every crack uncorrected, every peel unrepaired, every layer of fiction allowed to fall away until only the wall's own record remains. |

She moved to a converted barn near Wassaic in the Hudson Valley and started painting the way walls behave when no one is trying to save them. Her paintings don't look painted — they look like they happened. Thin washes of earth pigment seep into unprimed linen and bloom at their edges. Sea salt dissolved in water crystallizes as it dries, pushing pigment aside in tiny eruptions. She sprays mist from across the room. She leaves windows open overnight, letting the valley's humidity participate. Her palette — warm ivory, pale ochre, terre verte, dusty rose, faded lapis, raw sienna — is the palette of walls that have been alive for six hundred years. The patience isn't in the action. The patience is in the restraint: watching the material work and not correcting it when it does something she didn't plan.
