Sustainable Materials
| Celine Moreau knows what rain does to a wall because she spent fifteen years undoing it. On scaffolds across Provence — Sisteron, Arles, Gordes — she watched moisture enter through the roofline and migrate downward through centuries of plaster, dissolving salt as it went, carrying minerals in solution the way a river carries silt: invisibly, patiently, at the speed of physics rather than the speed of concern. She would arrive after the damage was done — the paint layer spalling off the substrate in curled flakes, the salt blooming through the surface in white crystalline eruptions, the pigment migrating in vertical tracks where gravity had pulled the dissolved minerals downward — and her job was to persuade the wall that none of this had happened. She was very good at that job. She was also very tired of lying. This work is the wall telling the truth for once. Three registers descend the surface like three chapters of a single admission. The upper band is the wall before it gave in — cream and pale ochre, still holding its shape, still pretending to be the surface someone intended. But the horizontal scraping marks are the record of an attempt to maintain it, and the fine cracks spreading across the field are the wall's first refusal to cooperate. At the left edge, a section of the surface has lifted away from its substrate and curled upward — spalling, the conservator calls it, when salt crystallizes behind the paint layer and pushes it off the wall like a body rejecting a graft. Celine used to re-adhere these flakes with rabbit-skin glue and micro-syringes, working under magnification, pressing each fragment back into alignment with the ghost of its original position. Here, she lets it lift. She lets the yellow underlayer show through the wound — the sienna ground that was never meant to be seen, the wall's actual face beneath the mask it was paid to wear. The middle register is the wall in surrender. Fine craquelure covers every centimeter — a network of small capitulations, each crack a place where the material chose to separate rather than continue holding a shape it could no longer sustain. The color shifts from light brown to deep grey-brown as if the wall is darkening with the weight of what it has absorbed: moisture, salt, time, the mineral memory of every rain that ever passed through it. There is no single dramatic event here — only the accumulated evidence of a surface that has been wet and dried and wet again so many times that the pattern of cracking has become its texture, its identity, its way of being in the world. The lower register is where gravity has the last word. Grey-green, streaked with vertical drip lines, the surface records what happened when the rain stopped trying to stay inside the wall and simply flowed downward through it, carrying dissolved pigment and mineral salt in solution, depositing thin trails of color as the moisture evaporated at the surface. The darker tones bleeding into this zone from above are not painted connections. They are the wall's own contents — the sienna, the umber, the earth pigments — migrating out of the structure and onto the surface, the way blood rises to a wound. Celine spent her first career pushing this material back inside and sealing the surface so no one could see it had ever moved. Now she builds paintings that do the opposite: walls that show you exactly where they've been leaking, and how long, and what they were carrying when they finally let go. |

About Artist
"The wall was always right. I was the one who was wrong."
She moved to a converted barn near Wassaic in the Hudson Valley and started painting the way walls behave when no one is trying to save them. Her paintings don't look painted — they look like they happened. Thin washes of earth pigment seep into unprimed linen and bloom at their edges. Sea salt dissolved in water crystallizes as it dries, pushing pigment aside in tiny eruptions. She sprays mist from across the room. She leaves windows open overnight, letting the valley's humidity participate. Her palette — warm ivory, pale ochre, terre verte, dusty rose, faded lapis, raw sienna — is the palette of walls that have been alive for six hundred years. The patience isn't in the action. The patience is in the restraint: watching the material work and not correcting it when it does something she didn't plan.
