Sustainable Materials
| Ingrid Solheim builds walls the way geology does: one layer at a time, each one carrying the physical memory of the body that placed it. Her essential tremor — the involuntary rhythm that has lived in her hands since her twenties — is not a limitation she works around. It is the instrument she works with. Where a steady hand would leave a clean seam, Ingrid's hand leaves an edge that breathes — slightly irregular, slightly alive, the way real geological strata breathe at their margins. This work is a vertical cross-section of that process. Five strata descend the surface, each a separate pour of pigmented impasto laid wet into the layer below. The upper bands hold their composure — pale cream, light umber — their surfaces settling under Ingrid's palm, the tremor registering only as fine horizontal ridges, like wind lines in sand. But as the layers deepen, the material begins to speak for itself. The warm ochre band carries an eroded upper edge: the contour where Ingrid's hand pressed forward and the tremor pulled it back, producing a boundary no deliberate gesture could have planned. Below it, the orange-red stratum has begun to crack — fine craquelure spreading outward, the evidence of a wall negotiating with its own weight. The deepest layer has surrendered entirely: wide fissures opening through dark umber, the impasto splitting along lines the material chose, not the artist. The raised ridge in the upper register — curved, lifting nearly two millimeters from the surface — is where the tremor produced something the plan did not anticipate. Ingrid does not correct these moments. She builds around them, the way a geologist accepts the anomaly in a core sample: not as error, but as data. The small impasto mound near the bottom is another such event — paint that accumulated where her hand paused, tremor and gravity conspiring to leave a cairn where a flat field was intended. These are not accidents. They are the record of a body telling the truth about what it costs to hold still and not be still. |
