| Cal Whitmore spent her first career insisting that surfaces hold ― re-adhering pigment, re-establishing edges, restoring coherence to walls the world had already begun to dismantle. When she began painting, she carried that precision with her, then slowly let it fail. Not as loss, but as method. What her restoration practice had suppressed ― the seep, the bleed, the patient surrender of a boundary to moisture and time ― became her painting's primary material. In this work, two stands of bare vegetation face each other across still water. They do not touch. They do not lean toward one another. And yet they are connected ― not by a bridge or a gesture, but by the water that holds both their reflections in a single continuous surface. The upper world and its mirror image are painted in the same hand, the same layers, the same willingness to let an edge dissolve before the next stroke is laid. The result is a surface with no front and back, no original and copy ― just one continuous act of seeing, folded at the waterline. The thick impasto marks scattered across the water's surface ― white, deliberate, almost tactile ― are the only moments where the painter's hand asserts itself against the drift. Small interruptions. A body remembering it has weight. The rest of the painting is given over to the process Celine trusts most: pigment left to find its own edge, fog allowed to decide how much to reveal, water permitted to hold whatever falls into it without judgment. |
