| The darkest ring is the first one. Every botanist knows this: the center of a tree's cross-section holds the tightest, darkest growth — the sapling years, when every season was a negotiation for light and the cells grew so compressed with effort that the pigment concentrates into near-black. The outer rings are lighter, wider, the cells looser because the tree found its canopy and growth no longer required such expenditure. The autobiography runs from dark to light, from struggle to abundance, from the inside out. The concentric ridges in the upper register are that autobiography made physical. Each ring is raised under the fingertip — real depth, real dimension, the way growth rings rise from a cut stump under touch. Amara Osei spent seven years reading these records in Appalachian hardwood: extracting core samples with an increment borer, a hollow steel tube screwed into the trunk until it reaches the pith, pulling out a cylinder no thicker than a drinking straw containing every year the tree lived. The color gradient here — deep umber at the center fading to cream at the outer edge — is not aesthetic choice. It is dendrochronology: the compressed, pigment-dense wood of early growth giving way to the looser, paler cells of maturity, each ring a single year's evidence that the tree was alive and trying. The horizontal waves in the lower register are her transect lines — the path she walked through tall grass, season after season, each pass a ridge pressed into the landscape by the repetition of her footsteps. The cream and pale brown interweaving is the field in late autumn, grass thinned enough to show the soil beneath, each undulation a slight variation the body learned to read the way a sighted person reads print. The fine granular texture is the sand she carried home on her boots each evening — the physical evidence of having been there, of having returned to the same place and found it changed. And the black band. It cuts diagonally through both time systems — through the rings and through the transects — with a texture that belongs to neither. Creased like old leather, frayed at its edges, carrying the weight of something that has been folded and refolded until the material remembers the shape of its own damage. This is the anomaly: the species that appeared where no species had appeared in ten seasons of counting. The reading that didn't fit. The prayer that came out different from every prayer before it. Amara did not remove it. She never removes the anomalies. They are the reason she kept walking the same path long after the other botanists had rotated to new sites — because the transect measures what repeats, and the anomaly is what the repetition was for. The rings tell you how long something lived. The waves tell you how often you checked. The black band tells you what you found when you stopped measuring and started seeing. |

About Artist
"Each mark is the same prayer. None of them sound alike."
Her core concept is Devotion through Repetition: a number four round sable brush, diluted oil paint, pressed into unprimed linen to leave a soft oval mark three or four millimeters across. Lift, move, press again. The same mark. The same pressure. The same interval. Hundreds of times, sometimes thousands. Each mark intends to be identical. None of them are. The hand trembles, the pressure varies, the spacing drifts — these deviations are not mistakes. They are the proof that a living hand made each mark. Her palette — moss green, lichen silver-grey, mushroom, bark brown, fog white, deep forest — is the floor of the Appalachian cove forest she hikes every morning. Green is her signature, the only one in the AEVART roster.
