| The white ridge arrived from neither direction. The upper field was built on a day the tremor pulled laterally — strokes sliding sideways as the hand tried to hold a line it was never going to hold straight, the canvas texture still visible because the impasto was thin and the knife was moving faster than the body could steer it. The lower field came from a different day, when the same tremor ran vertical — pressing down through thick impasto with a weight the plan didn't account for, each stroke heavier than the one before because the body was tired and the hand had stopped asking permission. Two days. Two directions. One wall. Between them, the surface was scraped back — not by intention, but by the moment the hand changed direction mid-stroke and the blade swept through wet paint faster than the plan allowed, exposing the pale underlayer the way a road cut reveals bedrock. The umber bleeding into the lower register is not a painted transition. It is the wall's own memory — pigment migrating from the upper strata into the lower as moisture moved between them, the two days negotiating their shared boundary in the hours between Ingrid's departure and her return. And then the white ridge. It belongs to neither system. It accumulated at the exact point where lateral force met vertical force and neither could proceed without the other's consent — paint heaping up because it had nowhere left to go, the way sediment piles against a bridge pier when the current hits an obstruction and the water cannot decide which side to flow around. The scraped edges of this ridge are not damage. They are the moment the material chose its own shape — the impasto cooling and contracting at different rates on either side, the surface healing unevenly around the displacement, leaving a rough edge that records the exact speed and angle at which the blade passed through. Ingrid Solheim spent two decades learning to read these moments. Her essential tremor — the involuntary rhythm that has lived in her hands since her twenties — is not an obstacle she works around. It is the instrument she works with. Where a steady hand would produce a clean seam, Ingrid's hand produces a living edge: slightly irregular, slightly breathless, the way real geological strata breathe at their margins. This painting is a core sample of two days in the practice of a body that cannot hold still and has never tried to — a surface that records not what was planned, but what happened when the plan met the tremor and the tremor told the truth. |
