| Your eyes got here first. They always do. That's fine. Let them look. But I didn't make this for them. Each compartment is a cell. That's what we call the unit in braille — two columns, three rows, six raised dots, one fingertip. You don't read braille with your eyes. You read it with the pad of your index finger, one character at a time, the way you'd learn someone's face in a dark room. I don't read braille. But I know what it feels like to need a language your eyes can't give you. So I built one. The shapes are the vocabulary. Rounded rectangle — that's stillness. I know it by the way my finger slides across it and finds no edge to catch on, just a gentle curve dissolving back into the surface. Trapezoid widening downward — something approaching. My finger registers the flare before my eye does: the shape getting wider under the pad, pressure spreading, the surface announcing that something is coming closer. Inverted triangle — something withdrawing. The contact area shrinking with each millimeter, my fingertip reading retreat the way your ear reads a sound getting fainter, except I'm reading it with skin. Circle — something complete. Semicircle — something half-known, the way a word feels when you can almost remember it but the shape stops halfway. I drew the grid by touch. My left index finger runs along the linen weave, following one thread, and my right hand follows the finger. When the thread dips, the line dips. When my finger has to choose between two crossing threads, the line forks. You can see the hesitation — those small trembles in the verticals — and you might think they're mistakes. They're not. They're the record of a body reading the surface while it marks it. The same way your finger leaves warmth on a braille dot after you've read it. Proof that contact happened. The mottled texture inside the black shapes is what paint feels like. Not what it looks like. Under your fingertip, thick paint is never smooth. It has grain. Resistance. A slight drag that says: I'm here. I'm material. I'm not an image, I'm a thing you can find. I made the texture that way on purpose — not for how it photographs, but for how it answers a searching hand. I arranged everything in a grid because I need to know where it is. When you can't hear, you organize space differently. You don't call out to find things. You put them in places you can return to, and you find them again by touch. The grid is my map. Each cell is a location I can go back to. The shapes along the right edge — rectangle, inverted triangle, circle, semicircle, square, circle — I read them in sequence sometimes, the way you might repeat a word until it stops meaning anything and then starts meaning everything. You've been reading this with your eyes. That's how it works in a gallery. The painting hangs on the wall and you stand at a distance and you look. But these shapes weren't made to be seen. They were made to be found — by a hand moving across a surface in the quiet, reading a language that has no sound and no alphabet, only the small honest vocabulary of contact: this is here, this is hard, this is soft, this is where I left it. |
