| You're looking at the tree. Everyone does. It's the only thing in this painting that isn't pretending to be something else — the sky wants to be water, the water wants to be sky, and the fog can't decide what it wants to be at all. But the tree just stands there. Dark. Vertical. Not asking permission. I put it there because I needed a witness. For ten years I drew the coastline of Louisiana, and every map I finished was already wrong. The shoreline I charted on Monday was open water by Friday. I drew the line anyway — a thin black mark across the paper, precise, confident, completely fictional. The water never agreed with that line. The land never agreed either. They were in the middle of an argument I was only hired to summarize. This painting is what that argument sounds like when you stop trying to write it down. The fog isn't weather. It's what happens when two things have been disagreeing for so long that they start to sound like each other. Water and air, tide and silt, the map and the ground — they've been at it so long the boundaries have gone soft, and the fog is the sound of that softening. The pale gold breaking through the grey isn't sunrise. It's the moment in the argument when one side almost convinces the other, and the whole room goes quiet for half a second. The water doesn't reflect the sky. The water and the sky are the same material at different densities — the way a coastline and a map of that coastline are the same story told at different speeds. The horizontal strokes in the lower half are my pen lines, the ones I used to draw the shore. Same motion: left to right, repeating, trying to keep up with something that won't hold still. I just traded ink for pigment and paper for linen. The habit is the same. The failure is the same. The honesty is new. And the tree. The tree is a benchmark — the fixed reference point a surveyor drives into the ground before measuring how much everything around it has moved. I couldn't save the coastline. But I could mark where it was. The tree says: at this spot, on this day, the land still reached this far. It will be wrong by next season. The water will have taken more ground. But the mark will still be there, testifying to a boundary that no longer exists, the way a lighthouse keeps sweeping its beam across a harbor that has filled with sand. You came close to this painting because something in it is holding still in a world that isn't. That's the tree's job. That used to be my job: stand at the edge of something that was disappearing and record the shape of what was still there. I don't draw maps anymore. But I still mark the shoreline. I just let the pigment do what the water always did — move, blur, dissolve the boundary — and I let one dark vertical form stand at the edge and say: this is where the land was. This is the testimony. |
