About A Single Breath
| The veil took three days. Not because it was difficult — because Tomás kept adding to it. Elena laid down the base in white and bone: a long curved stroke from the bride's head down to the lower right, like a river leaving a source. That was the first session. When Tomás came in the next morning, he pressed more white into the existing layer, then more, then dragged a wide knife through the wet edge to create the sense of wind pulling the fabric sideways. By the third day the veil had grown to almost half the canvas. Neither of them had planned that. The flowers on either side are Elena's work entirely. Short, dense strokes — terracotta, faded indigo, cochineal blush, warm sand — packed close together like sashiko patches. She didn't paint individual flowers. She painted the memory of flowers: the density, the color variation, the fact that from a distance they read as one mass but up close each stroke is separate. Tomás didn't touch that area. Some zones belong to one maker. The sky is where the two layers collide most visibly. Elena's warm peach underlayer shows through the cracks in Tomás's cream-and-ochre impasto. It wasn't planned that way — the paint just dried faster near the top edge, and the cracking happened on its own. Tomás could have filled the gaps. He didn't. The cracks let Elena's warmth through, and that warmth is what makes the sky feel like it's lit from within. The groom's suit is the darkest element on the canvas — a deep warm brown, not black. Black would have killed the painting. The brown sits quietly and lets everything else speak louder. They're not looking at each other. Their foreheads are touching. Eyes closed. That pose has a name in Spanish — confianza — trust. Not the kind you declare. The kind that shows up in your body without your permission. "A Single Breath." The distance between two foreheads is about one breath. Closer than that and you're the same person. Farther and you're two people pretending to be close. |

About Artist
Paint doing what I try to make clay do. Build up. Hold weight. Cast shadow
Tomás Vargas spent a decade making functional pottery — bowls, cups, vessels — in his garage, selling to Santa Fe galleries and using the rejects at home. He never chased control over his glazes; the kiln decided. Crackle, crawl, ash deposit — what potters call "faults," Tomás called the work.
They are married. They share a converted-garage studio. And since 2023, they share every canvas. Elena lays the ground — a rhythm of short parallel strokes like sashiko mending, terracotta dust and faded indigo, patches where the canvas breathes through. Tomás presses in — broad strokes of iron oxide and ash white dragged with full arm weight, cracking where the paint dries too fast, collapsing at the edges to reveal Elena's repair marks beneath. She builds the wound. He opens it wider. The painting is what's left.
Two makers. One canvas. No compromise.
